Barry Huffman, a self-taught artist, takes an unexpected journey of faith when she paints sixty-five portraits of small, mostly rural, churches in the western counties of North Carolina. She views the churches as architectural icons that serve s reminders of the role of Christianity in families, communities, and the founding of the United States. Courage, perseverance, honesty, and faithfulness – requirements of Christian devotion and Constitutional nationhood – are themes in her brief history essays that provide insight into the spirituality of the Founding Fathers as they move toward the vital documents that defined and secured the United States of America: the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution. Steeples and Stones of Fair Colors is the story of her faith journey, and she includes numerous other faith stories of a living God acting in everyday lives; the overarching theme is love – people loving God, family, and country, and God loving all His people.
The North Carolina Society of Historians presented Steeples and Stones of Fair Colors with a 2022 book award.
