The course will meet for eight weeks on Thursday evenings, from September 24 to November 12, 6 PM to 8 PM, at Catawba Valley Community College in Hickory, NC, in the Redhawk Publications Classroom, CAD First Floor, Room 161.
No previous background in classical Greek studies or advanced modernist literary theory is required. This course is designed for curious, lifelong learners who want to finally overcome their 'bookshelf intimidation' of Joyce by using Homer as their direct guide. Reading is encouraged but entirely optional. By the end of the class, you'll be motivated to read it... Using Joyce's well-known structural schemas, we will see how he 'reincarnates’ the Greek king into Leopold Bloom—a Jewish advertising canvasser wandering the ordinary streets of Dublin on a single day, June 16th, 1904. By matching Joyce's 18 modern chapters to their ancient Greek predecessors, we will explore how mundane everyday events can acquire monumental, epic significance!
